MAN TRUCKING ASSISTANT

Platform: Mobile app
Timeline: 2017 - 2019
In this large project, I was responsible for conducting competitive analysis on apps used by truck drivers, identifying pain points in their daily routines, and creating an end-to-end app experience that supported their day-to-day routines. The app needed to provide 24/7 roadside assistance, streamlined the truck check-in process, connected drivers with the global MAN brand, and offered customization options for a personalized experience.
As the project progressed, I created 3D assets of vehicles and also developed the app's illustration language. I created hundreds of truck illustrations, which were transformed into an interactive, pseudo-3D experience. This allowed users to navigate, learn about their vehicle, and perform maintenance tasks.
RESPONSIBILITIES
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
The truck driving world is now more diverse than ever before. What was once predominantly composed of 40-60-year-old men is now more evenly divided between men and women, ranging from 20 to 60 years old.
To make this app truly valuable, it needed to be easy to use, streamline drivers' daily tasks, and ensure that new drivers could seamlessly enter the trucking industry with minimal friction.
Initial research revealed that one of the biggest pain points for drivers was their daily vehicle checks which involved numerous forms and over 90 inspection points. This took up valuable time out of their day when they needed to focus on making their delivery on time.
To improve this experience, I designed a visual-based system that guided drivers through the check-in process, allowing them to complete inspections in a few minutes. This solution enabled drivers to easily record proof of their checks without the need for filling ou lengthy forms.
Drivers also expressed frustration over the lack of information on how to properly maintain their vehicles. Previously, they either had to learn on the fly or rely on advice from older drivers. To bridge this knowledge gap, I expanded the visual-based interaction system I created, developing hundreds of interactive illustrations that covered every part of the truck.
Drivers could interact with these illustrations to learn how to perform maintenance, provide proof of servicing, and, if necessary, contact roadside assistance with real-time updates on their arrival.
My collaboration with the MAN branding team was unique. The app needed to reflect the MAN brand identity while also modernizing the company and bringing it into the 21st century. We developed a unique push-pull dynamic, where I pushed for a fresher, more modern feel, while they ensured the brand remained grounded in its core identity.
FINAL THOUGHTS
From the very beginning, the objective was to develop an app that would be invaluable to every driver, irrespective of their experience level in the trucking industry. Collaborating with this brand motivated me to design a system that significantly improved drivers' experiences, making their daily interactions with their trucks more efficient and enjoyable. It also aimed to empower new drivers to quickly onboard into their new careers. This approach not only set up new drivers for success but also reinvigorated seasoned drivers, enhancing their long-term engagement and satisfaction.
